In reading Ethnography, it was a very different way of approaching the explanation of culture. This text was more formal and to the point while My Freshman Year, was very descriptive and kept you wanting to read. Ethnography talks about throughout the novel they will be talking about the study of language and literacy. They talk about using the word culture, not as a noun, but as a verb (an ongoing action). The authors talk about how there is not a set number of cultures but instead, cultures are ever changing. They say that one person describes themselves as being a different culture then the person next to them, but if you think about it, the person next to you might have one of the many cultures that you obtain yourself. They also bring into the picture how our society today is based upon reading and writing. Since literacy became prominent in North America, it has been the focus of schooling and "key marks" of status today. Although Ethnography was full of tons of information about culture, language, and literacy, at times it was hard to understnad fully because of all the advanced language.
